Nothing’s really a prized possession other than family - you see them being credited for your success, providing you with small yet heartfelt moments growing up, or acting as a long-lasting protection. For as long as we can remember, family has always been an utmost priority.

The ancient Egyptians treated children like a gift from the gods, and grew up in a society that was centered around their fulfillment. To some of our siblings today, it sounds all too familiar.

As important as children may be, parents tend to favor some of their children; it may be an invisible reach, or one that distances siblings from each other.

Expectations...And More Expectations

Acting as an imposed ‘threshold’ that our parents give us, expectations often transcend beyond grades, but can pour into behaviors and relationships. Moreover, expectations are known to be a dividend among siblings; there can only be so much care from your parents, and so little options.

Naturally Born Leaders

Knowing that order in a family is not interchangeable, parents often shift leadership and accountability to a particular sibling in the family, which commonly results in the oldest child. Given that they are older than the rest of their siblings and are tasked to be a secondary caregiver, the treatment of a family’s birth order relies on such occurrences.

However, this does not mean that younger siblings cannot be family leaders - while older siblings are favored, it leaves room for greater ambition. This can be observed through phrases such as:

• “Let’s sort this out between us.”

• “You’re Mom’s favorite!”

• “Why does he get all the praise?
